The AI SEO Handbook

The AI SEO Handbook is a practical reference for getting your business found and cited in AI answers. It organises everything on this site about AI SEO by what you are trying to do, so you can start with the terms, the mechanics, a specific assistant, the technical layer, measurement, or the decision to bring someone in.

Foundations

What AI SEO is, and the terms behind it: GEO, AEO, LLM SEO, and AI visibility.

How AI search works

The mechanics: how answers are assembled, which sources get cited, and why.

Getting cited by each assistant

The per-surface guides: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Grok, and the rest.

Technical AI SEO

The plumbing: crawler access, rendering, schema, llms.txt, and migrations.

Measure AI visibility

How to see where you stand: audits, monitoring, share of voice, and traffic.

Strategy and diagnosis

What to do about it: strategy, content, and the diagnosis when you are not cited.

Hiring and working with a specialist

When to bring someone in, and how to tell a diagnosis apart from delivery.

AI SEO by industry

How the work changes for a specific category, from SaaS to hospitality.

FAQ

Common questions

What is AI SEO?
AI SEO is the work of getting your business retrieved, understood, and cited when people ask AI assistants a question, rather than only ranked in a list of links. It builds on the same technical foundation as SEO but is judged on citation, not position.
How is this handbook organised?
By intent, not by date. The sections move from the foundations and how AI search works, through getting cited in each assistant and the technical layer, to measurement, strategy, hiring, and how the work changes by industry. Each entry is a self-contained article you can read on its own.
Where should I start?
If AI SEO is new to you, start with Foundations. If you know the terms and want results, go to how AI search works, then measurement, so you can see where you stand before you change anything. If you are evaluating help, the hiring section compares diagnosis and delivery.
Is AI SEO the same as GEO and AEO?
Largely, yes. Generative engine optimization and answer engine optimization are narrower names for the same core work of being cited in AI-generated answers. AI SEO is the umbrella. The glossary sets out each term and where they genuinely differ.
How often is the handbook updated?
Continuously. New articles are added to the relevant section as they publish, and the glossary grows alongside them. It is a living reference rather than a fixed course.
